The Lake Erie Amateur Radio Association maintains open repeaters that use the club's call sign - WR8ABC.  LEARA owns and operates five repeaters in the Greater Cleveland area: three on the Westside in Lakewood, Ohio and two on the Eastside; one in Highland Hills, Ohio and one in Macedonia, Ohio.

All of our repeaters are open to all properly licensed Amateur Radio operators.

We ask those who make use of our repeaters or linking services to consider supporting the club by becoming a member.

146.760

 

The "76 repeater" operates on an output frequency of 146.760 MHz with an input frequency of 146.160 MHz (-600 KHz).  The transmitter is located in Highland Hills, Ohio with remote inputs in Lakewood, Newbury, and University Circle for a total of three inputs.  A PL of 110.9 Hz is required for access and is transmitted by the repeater for Tone Squelch operation.

This repeater will broadcast weather alerts issued by the National Weather Service office in Cleveland.  It is also the primary Skywarn repeater for Cuyahoga county.  Details on the Skywarn page.

We have inputs in Lakewood, University Circle and Newbury.

Known Issues

We are aware of the following issues and are working to resolve them:

  • The Lakewood input has a repeating "clicking" or "ticking" noise.
  • The Lakewood input does not have working PL on the link frequency. I believe the link receiver has a bad PL board.
  • Weather alerts are temporarily unavailable.
  • The University Circle input is off the air due to a facility remodel.  We are unable to access the facility due to COVID restrictions.
  • PL (CTCSS) needs to be set to:
    • Transmit alongside weather alerts.
    • Not transmit during ID tones.
  • The Lakewood input has a long "squelch crash" which is slightly annoying. This may be better when the PL board on the Link receiver is fixed.
  • The ID and courtesy tones are too loud.

The "88 repeater" operates on an output frequency of 146.880 MHz with an input frequency of 146.280 MHz (-600 KHz).  The repeater is located in Lakewood, Ohio.  A PL of 110.9 Hz is required for access and is transmitted by the repeater for Tone Squelch operation.

224.900

Our 220 repeater operates on an output frequency of 224.900 MHz with an input frequency of 223.300 MHz (-1.600 MHz).  The repeater is located in Lakewood, Ohio.  It requires a PL of 141.3 Hz for access.
 

444.400

The "dot four repeater" operates on an output frequency of 444.400 MHz with an input frequency of 449.400 MHz (+5.000 MHz).  The repeater is located in Macedonia, Ohio.  It requires a PL of 131.8 Hz for access.

The .40 repeater is currently offline due to an issue with it's controller.

444.700

Yaesu Fusion Digital

The "dot seven repeater" operates on an output frequency of 444.700 MHz with an input frequency of 449.700 MHz (+5.000 MHz).  The repeater is located in Lakewood, Ohio.

This repeater is a Yaesu System Fusion digital repeater operating in "automatic" mode and it can be used in analog or digital mode. Analog uses a PL of 131.8. A System Fusion-capable radio can be used with this repeater.  No tone, digital squelch, or digital code options are required to operate.

Yaesu System Fusion is capable of using the full 12.5 kHz bandwidth for:

  • Voice/Data simultaneous communication mode (audio communications with error correction).
  • Voice Full Rate Mode (high quality voice communications).
  • High Speed Data Communication Mode (transmissions of images and data).

Discontinued

Over the years, a number of services provided by LEARA have been discontinued.  This list is solely "whatever happened to...?"  Include "lack of use" as the first reason.

  • Eastside 224.940/R: equipment failure.
  • Hamnet BBS: the Internet.
  • 53.230/R: loss of receive site and closing of Sunny Acres Hospital.
  • Autopatch: cellphones and repeater rebuild project.
  • Packet equipment: decline of the backbone system.
