  2. Since many of us are still hunkering down, and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change much by the end of June, Field Day is going to be a lot different this year. Our club has cancelled our club event, and I’m really going to miss helping newcomers operate the GOTA station, the food, and all the camaraderie. That doesn’t mean that Field Day can’t still be fun, though. Let’s’ get creative! First, note that the ARRL has modified the Field Day rules for this year. The biggest change is that Class D stations, that is home stations using commercial power, can now work other Class D stations for points. Previously, this wasn’t allowed. The second change is that... Read moreLet’s get creative this year on Field Day

  3. With the Corona Virus shutting down businesses, school, social gatherings and more, we all have to adjust the way that we do things. Amateur radio is no different! We can’t have regular club meetings, we can’t do training events, we can meet for breakfast somewhere and just chew the fat. We can’t even give tests to new potential hams anymore. So what does that mean for those that want to get their license? Virtual testing is a thing now. If you would have asked me six months ago if it would ever happen, I probably would have said no, but now, I have already heard from people that have taken their test virtually. There are even some clubs that are... Read moreHow Is The Corona Virus Affecting Ham Radio?

  6. Does your ham club know what is going on in your club all the time? One of the best ways to get the word out that something is happening in our club, is to use social media! This can be any aspect or multiple aspects of social media. Relying solely on word of mouth can severely limit the information getting out to your members and something like a call down tree is labor intensive. Why not make one or two post and be able to reach your entire membership and even others outside your club? Why Should A Ham Club Be On Social Media A while back, I wrote a post called “Are Ham Radio Clubs Dying?”, there were several... Read moreSocial Media and Ham Radio Clubs

  7. I’m sure if you are a ham you have been involved in a net at some point. But my question is, have you ever thought about being on the other side the radio? That’s where I talk about in this post. I have been a ham since June, or maybe July, of 1995. That’s nearly 25 years as a ham! In that time I’ve learned how to communicate on the radio, how to listen and most importantly how to be a net control operator. I have been a net control for a standard training net, a Skywarn net, an emergency nets, a RACES net and several other types of nets. Knowing how to run a net has also helped me... 8. I have seen many posts on QRZ, Reddit, Facebook groups and other places about what 73 means and which is correct 73 or 73s? So let’s talk about that today. Where Did 73 Come From? The term 73 was created in 1879 by Water P. Phillips along with hundreds of other shorthand code to help those that were telegraph operators. These codes were shorthand for commonly used words to help decrease the number of characters that were required for sending a telegraph.  By 1909 there were nearly 1800 codes ranging from the two-character short cut that we use to this day for state abbreviations to short cut word POTUS, which means President Of The United States. This code includes both... Read moreIs it “73” or “73’s”?
