For those of you not familiar with WebEx we plan to have the meeting open for anyone to join as early as 6:30pm Tuesday night so you may test the following procedures prior to the meeting.   They may or may not be other participants there at the time you join.  At the start of the meeting we will mute all participants and selectively unmute those people who need to speak.

LEARA's Tuesday meetings will be held remotely using Cisco WebEx.  You can attend Tuesday's meeting with any device that supports WebEx including your home computer, a mobile phone, or a tablet.  You are NOT required to have a working camera and can choose to never turn your camera on.

Your audio connection can be either internet based, or you may choose to dial into the meeting with a telephone by calling 408-418-9388 at the time of the meeting knowing the meeting ID number and the numerical password provided below.  In fact, if you don't wish to see the slide deck our presenter intends to share and just listen to the meeting you can call into it without using your computer at all.

When you join a WebEx meeting for the first time WebEx will want you to download the WebEx helper application or you can click here and download it now.  This is encouraged but if you have trouble installing this small application you can always choose to join the meeting "from a browser" without that application.  You can still watch and participate in a meeting without this application, but the experience with the application is much better.

When you first join the meeting you'll see a screen similar to this screenshot below.   See the bullet items below the screen shot:

  • The red circle shown indicates that I want to mute or disable my camera when I join.
  • The Start Meeting button would connect to the meeting.  Before you push this choose your audio connection

Clicking on the "Don't connect audio" pop up menu presents three choices.   If you have speakers or headphones on your device feel free to use the computer audio solution.

If you wish to call in with a phone, choose "Call In" here.  Once you've picked your audio choice click the Start Meeting button.

Let's explore how to use WebEx's buttons once you've connected:

  • The multiple circles in WebEx will "disappear" when the presentation begins.  To get them to come back simply move your mouse
  • From left to right the buttons do the following:
  • Mute your microphone.  The moderator of the meeting will mute and unmute people once the meeting begins
  • Mute you video.  If you have a camera, this shuts off the video stream
  • Share your screen - this function will be grayed out during our meeting
  • Record - this function won't be available to participants during our meeting
  • Participant List - Use this to bring up or close the participant list.
  • Chat - this brings up the chat window
  • More options - self explanatory
  • Leave the meeting - this will disconnect you from the meeting

How to ask questions of our presenter during the meeting:

If you wish to ask a question during the meeting please do not just unmute yourself and start talking.  Instead, bring up the participant panel and find your own name.  Once there, hover over your name and look for the Raise Hand icon and click it.   It looks like the circle shown here to the left of my red mute circle:

When you do this, the moderator will let the presenter finish their thought and interrupt to say there is a question.  We will unmute your line and tell you to go ahead.    Please remember to lower your hand so we don't mistake you for future questions.

If you can not get the raise hand function to work you can say in the chat that you have a question and we'll try to unmute you.   As a last resort, you can unmute yourself and say you have a question.
